PerkinElmer: Automating Laboratories with Innovative Thinking

Liquid/fluid handling systems are indispensable components of molecule screening workflows in the drug discovery and development pipeline. Advancements in automated fluid handling systems have proven to complement assay downsizing while fostering greater speeds in the development of drug candidates and chemical probes for biological systems. They also streamline screening procedures substantially by increasing throughput and providing consistency and dependability in experimental workflows. However, true autonomy in such laboratory workflows is not just achieved by the liquid handler but is rather necessitated by seamlessly managing the associated software, consumables, reagents, and the relevant instrumentation technology.

PerkinElmer offers a comprehensive, integrated solution that includes all of the above prerequisites to achieve such operational coherence among these disparate laboratory workflow elements, thereby bringing true automation and consistency to the laboratory. By limiting manual interactions, including hand pipetting, the efficiency of the genomic workflow is collectively improved. As a complete solution, PerkinElmer showcases enormous value to automation solutions by nurturing a fundamental understanding of the entire experimental workflow to create the reagents that fit each client’s purpose.

The firm has developed technologies that support ‘eight-channel variable spanning heads,’

allowing smaller workflows to be implemented in very large integrated systems. The optimized workflow also includes magnetic bead-based technologies for nucleic acid extraction through the chemagic portfolio . Additionally, PerkinElmer’s portfolio offers the Zephyr G3 and the Sciclone G3 liquid handlers. These devices incorporate 96 and 384 channel multi pipetting heads with pre-configured decks and thermal elements designed to prepare libraries for next-generation sequencing. “PerkinElmer offers solutions for the entire genomic workflow from sample preparation to library preparation prior to sequencing,” says James Atwood, GM.

The firm always takes the extra step of programming liquid handlers instead of merely deploying the instrument on the customer site. “We spend a great deal of time supporting customers for NGS workflows by programming the instruments and certifying them by preparing libraries that are quality controlled and sequenced,” explains James. The engineering teams that support the instrumentation are backed up by scientists specializing in internal applications development. These scientists develop protocols for customers and support external reagent partners and internal reagent groups, effectively making the whole workflow efficient.

To address a wide range of applications, PerkinElmer offers the JANUS G3 liquid handler portfolio. The JANUS G3 instrument is the firm’s highly flexible liquid handling workstation can be configured with an eight tip spanning arm and/or a 96/384 pipetting arm with optional gripper. Several PerkinElmer instrumentation and third-party instrumentation can be integrated on the JANUS G3 liquid handler, either as a standalone device or integrated with a robotic arm, aiding in complete walk-away automation.

An example of the JANUS G3 liquid handler’s applicability can be seen in their recent collaboration with Oxford Immunotec. During this collaboration, the JANUS G3 liquid handlers enabled Oxford Immunotec to proceed with its plans to automate its testing workflows and allow its customers to migrate to automated laboratory processes. Facilitating such workflow automation for various firms and laboratories, PerkinElmer considers customer relationships as their highest priority.

To cater to customers’ growing needs, the firm launched its PKeye mobile operations monitor, enabling true walk-away automation while using their liquid handlers. The PKeye monitor includes a set of cameras that are mounted on the instrument, in addition to cloud-based software that monitors the instrument status and log files in real-time. Any alert triggered during the process is passed up to the secure cloud-based website controlled by the lab manager and then passed down to the lab technician’s cell phone. This process allows a lab technician to remain away from the instrument while running and still get notified when manual intervention is needed. “The PKeye monitor takes the benefit of a liquid handler and dramatically improves it. It allows you to walk away from the product while it’s running,” concludes James.
