Scientists are combining doses of antibiotics to create a combination that can kill the infection that can be tremendously complicated to treat the patients suffering from cystic fibrosis.
FREMONT, CA: The researchers from Aston University and Birmingham Children's Hospital have developed a new treatment that can entirely kill bacterial infection. These types of infections can be fatal for patients with cystic fibrosis and chronic lung conditions like bronchiectasis.

The Mycobacterial Research Group combined the dose of three antibiotics that includes amoxicillin and imipenem-relebactam. The researchers discovered that the medicine could successfully kill the infection that is otherwise extremely difficult to treat in patients who suffer from cystic fibrosis as the infection can decline the functions of their lungs severely, sometimes causing death.
More than 10,000 people in the UK (Cystic Fibrosis Trust) gets affected by cystic fibrosis (CF) as it is a genetic condition, and almost 70,000 people have to live with the disease all over the world (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation). On the other hand, bronchiectasis has an effect on more than 210,000 citizens in the UK (British Lung Foundation).
The Mycobacterium abscessus is a type of bacterial pathogen that belongs to a similar kind of bacteria that is the primary reason to cause tuberculosis, and it also generates severe lung infections in people with lung disorders like cystic fibrosis and particularly in children. Moreover, the disease is also massively drug-resistant, so presently, patients are provided with an antibiotic cocktail that creates immense side effects like hearing loss, and many more that are even incurable.

Sixteen infected cystic fibrosis patients were used in the research as the researchers took their samples of the pathogen for testing the latest drug combination so that they can determine the amount necessary to kill the bacteria. According to the discovery, the amount of amoxicillin-imipenem-relebactam necessary is less enough that can be used safely on the patients.
Before this discovery, it was practically almost impossible to get rid of Mycobacterium abscessus from the people suffering from cystic fibrosis. The condition of the patients might be critical if they need a lung transplant because they are not qualified for the surgery if the infection is present.
