In the first quarter of 2019, Valneva was looking for regulatory authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine. The European Medicines Agency has started the examination of VLA2001, as the firm agreed to provide the EU with up to 60 million doses to the bloc. IXIARO, the company's licensed Japanese encephalitis vaccine, uses Valneva's Vero-cell platform for the shot. The company expects the vaccine will produce a broad immune response, targeting the whole virus rather than solely the spike protein, which is currently being tested for VLA2001 cross-neutralization against Omicron, as well as the candidate's potential as a booster shot.
As soon as Novavax received its first approval for its COVID-19 vaccine in Indonesia, it achieved conditional marketing authorization in the EU for its protein-based vaccination NVX-CoV2373. The firm intends to submit a complete package to the US Food and Drug Administration, and it is also pursuing regulatory approval in a number of other countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore. NVX-CoV2373, a two-dose vaccine, which was engineered from the genetic sequence of the first strain of SARS-CoV-2, was generated using Novavax's recombinant nanoparticle technology to manufacture antigen derived from the coronavirus spike (S) protein and is made with their saponin-based Matrix-M adjuvant.
