First-ever treatment for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy
Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy is a growing and potentially fatal disease in which the amyloid fibrils, made of misfolded transthyretin protein, deposit in walls of the heart's left ventricle. These deposits help to harden the muscle, eventually leading to heart failure. A newly developed compound, tafamidis, combines to transthyretin to avoid misfolding of the deposited protein. In a high-profile clinical trial, victims on tafamidis had 30 precent lower all-cause of the mortality as well as a lower rate of the cardiovascular-related hospitalizations compared with similar patients on placebo.
Antibiotic envelope for blocking infection with the cardiac implants
Cardiac implant equipment like pacemakers and defibrillators come with a risk of getting the infection. But encasing these devices in an antibiotic cover, which is a mesh sleeve embedded with antibiotics. This envelope ensures the slow delivery of two antibiotics, rifampin and minocycline, for seven days after implantation. The week-long release of antibiotics reduces the risk of infection.
Diabetes drugs for heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction
So far, no treatment is available for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Although sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors that are used currently to lower blood glucose for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, are investigated for HFpEF. Using SGLT2 inhibitors, for this reason, became of interest when researchers reported that these drugs reduced the risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes. Individuals with heart failure and minimized ejection fraction without diabetes on SGLT2 inhibitors showed similar results.
