Not only was the sand used to produce pharmaceutical-grade glass in high demand, but it was also impossible to produce enough glass vials to give vaccination doses to every individual on the earth. As medicine manufacturers anticipated delivery, it became apparent that insufficient glass vials were available to meet demand. Creating the required quantity would have taken years—a non-negotiable time constraint for stopping a global pandemic.

Biologics are significantly more complicated than small-molecule medications, necessitating more sophisticated packaging to protect and sustain their therapeutic advantages. Due to their sensitivity to environmental conditions, they require more robust containers than standard glass can provide. Additionally, biologics can interact with the chemicals on the surface of the glass, resulting in the formation of aggregates and contamination of the biologic drug formulation.
