To remain competitive, the healthcare business has been forced to refocus its operations. It now oversees the production of patented pharmaceuticals. However, many processes, including R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and sales, have been partially outsourced.
Fremont, CA: Pharmaceutical contract manufacturing, emerging in the 1980s, was initially seen as a solution to "emergency" situations. Pharmaceutical companies turned to Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMOs) due to technical problems, manpower shortages, additional orders, or the production of end-of-life pharmaceuticals. Over the years, CMOs have evolved from occasional suppliers to strategic partners, now integral to all stages of the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Traditionally, the pharmaceutical industry managed the entire development cycle of new products in-house, from research into new chemicals to drug production. This model has shifted due to several factors, including patent expirations, the rise of generic drugs, and challenges in replacing products. These issues have compelled the healthcare sector to refocus its operations to stay competitive. While pharmaceutical companies still oversee the production of patented drugs, many processes, including R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and sales, have been partially outsourced.
The quest for a new molecule is the riskiest phase of drug development. To mitigate these risks, pharmaceutical companies are forming alliances with organizations possessing valuable expertise, particularly biotechnology firms and their innovative drugs. This strategy allows for sharing the risks and costs associated with research. After discovering a molecule, two critical stages follow: pre-clinical development and clinical trials. Pre-clinical development helps understand a drug's action before human testing, while clinical trials demonstrate efficacy and analyze side effects. Outsourcing these stages is crucial due to the sheer volume of trials conducted simultaneously and the need for precise protocols involving large patient groups with specific qualifications.
Pharmaceutical outsourcing has benefited significantly from the restructuring of pharmaceutical companies, though it remains dependent on their strategies. In today's competitive global market, CMOs must distinguish themselves by offering increasingly high-performing services.
