In the period of big data and new analytical technologies, research laboratories are rapidly adopting new lab automation equipment and processes.
FREMONT, CA: During the period of big data and new analytical technologies, new lab automation equipment and processes have been rapidly adopted by the research laboratories. According to the survey made by ScienceBoard.net, many researchers would prefer to use these new technologies, although most labs are already using some type of automation in their workflows. In this survey, around 74 percent of scientists reported that almost half of the operations were automated in their labs. Only between 51 and 75 percent of lab procedures were automated, according to 19 percent of those polled, with only 6 percent reporting 76 percent automation. In this survey, bioinformatics/cheminformatics, LIMSs, and specialized SDMSs were the most commonly used software and tools. In the future, many researchers want to increase the utilization of laboratory workflow automation systems, electronic laboratory notebooks, and SDMSs.

Even though lab automation benefits are so widely recognized, the cost is the most restricting factor, as 65 percent reported lack of funds as a major issue. Many scientists either do not plan to make any capital investment in the next year or do not have the authorization to make the purchase, as per the poll. In terms of value, around 33 percent plan to spend less than 50,000 dollars, while 27 percent are thinking to spend 50000 dollars to 200000 dollars. Hence, the cost is the limiting factor for the practical implementation of lab automation in many laboratories. COVID-19 is another limiting factor for lab automation implementation. Around 56 percent of scientists have postponed their plans to make capital investments in lab automation. On the contrary, around 12 percent said that pandemic accelerated their investments.
