Salipro Biotech AB recently announced that it has been granted the European Patent to cover the novel method of direct extraction of membrane proteins.
FREMONT, CA: The Swedish biotech firm Salipro Biotech AB recently announced that it has been granted the European Patent No. 3463303, named Saposin lipoprotein particles and libraries from the crude membrane. The patent covers the company's novel process of direct extraction of membrane proteins (DirectMXTM) from cells or crude membranes to allow drug production for difficult drug targets, and even the generation of libraries with Salipro® particles describing the proteome membrane, the particles itself and their uses.

The main application is discovering drugs where membrane proteins serve the targets of more than 60 percent of clinically used drugs. However, development in drug production is often hindered by the inherent instability of the massive issue of membrane proteins, tackled by Salipro's technology platform to regulate those essential drug targets.
Jens Frauenfeld, the CEO, comments, "Ever since its inception, DirectMXTM has had a profound impact on how we accelerate drug discovery with our pharma partners. Our foundational IP covering the Salipro® platform technology has already resulted in various patents being granted to Salipro Biotech in the US, EU, China and Japan, and this patent will provide additional broad protection for our proprietary platform technology for the stabilization of challenging drug targets."
Maria Knudsen, Business Developer, comments, "DirectMXTM is rapidly becoming established as a key drug discovery platform and we are already partnering with major pharma companies on a range of targets, including GPRCs, SLCs and Ion Channels. Further strengthening our patent portfolio will enable us to increase the value of such collaborations as well as moving towards building our own discovery pipeline."
Salipro Biotech AB is a privately-owned biotech firm focused on developing next-generation therapeutics by discovering complex drug targets. The company is based in Stockholm, Sweden, with an entirely held IP portfolio covering the Salipro® technology platform to stabilize membrane protein.
Many drug targets are so-called membrane proteins, but these targets are highly unpredictable and difficult to examine. The proprietary Salipro® technology stabilizes membrane proteins in their native forms, allowing them to be used for therapeutic antibodies, tiny molecule drugs, and structure-based drug design in drug discovery programs.
