FREMONT CA: Like every other company, Pharma has a footprint on the environment in the midst of a climate crisis, and it has a responsibility to discover solutions to alleviate the damage. In a GlobalData poll last year, 43 per cent of respondents observed the environment was the most critical ESG (environmental, social, and governance) issue for the pharmaceutical industry to address.
Drug companies, as part of an industry that generates more greenhouse emissions than the automotive industry, must make a determined effort to lower the carbon footprint connected with getting their medicines to patients. Every step of the pharmaceutical supply chain has a carbon footprint, starting with the raw materials for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that are acquired.

Another carbon-intensive stage of a pharmaceutical company's supply chain is manufacturing the completed product. Continuous manufacturing, an economical alternative to batch manufacturing that merges numerous discrete production phases into one single, constant production line, is one of the most effective approaches to reduce carbon emissions related to drug development. The emphasis has been on small-molecule production principles, and over the last 6 to 10 years, persistent process manufacturing has evolved significantly.
In the last two to three years, the number of permitted items produced with continuous manufacturing has increased. As that portfolio grows, the usage of unabating manufacturing becomes more appealing.
Solutions for a more environmentally friendly supply chain are gaining popularity in the pharmaceutical business. The industry is more likely to move in that manner during the next decade. However, the most powerful drive will come from the market itself — just the inability to do business as usual will be the main driving force for corporations to consider, at a fundamental level, how they could replace non-sustainable actions with more sustainable biology-based ones.
