To maintain safety in radiation therapy, every machine performance and patient delivery measurement must be as accurate as possible.
FREMONT, CA: Patient Quality Assurance in the Medical Physics department begins with treatment planning and continues through pre-treatment administration and in-vivo monitoring. Machine QA, comprising daily, monthly, and annual QA testing, as well as imaging, VMAT, and MLC QA, are all handled by the Medical Physics department. All of these measures, when taken collectively, ensure that therapies are administered to patients safely and effectively. Experts recently conducted a poll of organizations that provide QA software platforms to understand more about the many options available. Due to the extensive QA workflow, as described, automation and integration are critical for QA. There is a push to integrate quality assurance into radiation treatment delivery systems or to market it as part of what a delivery system supplier sells to the customer. This may include a collaboration with a third-party QA solutions provider. Rather than putting complete reliance on a single vendor who designed the treatment system, third-party providers supply risk mitigation to hospitals and cancer centres as an independent QA measurement resource.

In a Physics World webinar titled Independent QA and the Necessity of Data Access, the senior director of research and regulation for Sun Nuclear remarked that the reason for the importance of independent checks is that it avoids bias error, both in design and most importantly in risk assessment. Self-checking is inherently biased and quality assurance that is not reliant is a self-check.
These considerations are part of the reason why the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) encourage independent verification in their current guidelines. All of them advocate irradiating a mass of material that looks like human flesh, before starting therapy to ensure that the beam is delivered as anticipated.
Medical Physics staff must also function efficiently to ensure the facility's operational continuity . The goal of QA solutions is to standardize and centralize workflows. These systems also provide extra efficiencies, as well as independent oversights of various radiation therapy treatment delivery systems.
