Oral dissolvable strip technology solutions are moving into a broader innovation phase as pharmaceutical manufacturers explore more flexible and patient-specific dosage forms. The technology’s small size, rapid disintegration and adaptable formulation base make it relevant for personalized medicine, especially when standard tablets are poorly suited to patient needs.
The oral dissolving film market is projected to grow from USD 0.43 billion in 2026 to USD 0.98 billion by 2035, with a CAGR of 9.6 percent. Market coverage describes the format as an alternative to tablets, capsules and liquids, while noting that pharmaceutical companies are researching it globally.

Patients rarely have the same needs when it comes to medication. A child may require a smaller dose and a formulation that is easier to take, while an older adult may benefit from a medicine that does not involve swallowing a large tablet. Others may need formulations that help address adherence challenges or reduce the burden of frequent dosing. Designing medicines with those differences in mind is an important part of developing effective oral dissolving films.
Research into orodispersible films has expanded to cover a broad range of active ingredients as well as different manufacturing techniques. A review published in Pharmaceutics notes that these films can be produced using several manufacturing methods, supporting both large-scale production and more personalized formulations. At the same time, the review points out that technical and manufacturing challenges still need to be addressed.
This creates room for technology platforms that support flexible dosing. A film can potentially be designed with different strengths, release profiles or drug combinations when the formulation permits. For hospitals, specialty pharmacies and pharmaceutical developers, that flexibility may support more patient-centered treatment models.
Digital and automated manufacturing may strengthen this direction. A 2026 pharmaceutical Industry 4.0 study examined automated production of personalized drugs using a planar transport system, applying real prescription data for 40 drugs and showing scalable scheduling for up to 500 orders. While not limited to oral films, the study reflects a wider move toward flexible pharmaceutical production.
Oral films could also support therapeutic areas where speed and ease of use matter. Migraine, nausea, mental health and addiction treatment have all been linked to the oral thin film market demand in the current industry segmentation. Coherent Market Insights estimates the global oral thin films market at USD 3.73 billion in 2026 and projects it to reach USD 7.18 billion by 2033.
Greater flexibility in manufacturing does not reduce regulatory expectations. Whether a product is made at scale or tailored to individual patient needs, manufacturers still need to demonstrate consistent dose accuracy, stability, traceability and patient safety. Regulators will want clear evidence that any level of customization does not introduce variability that could affect treatment outcomes.
Oral dissolvable strip technology solutions are becoming part of the personalized drug-delivery conversation. Their value will depend on whether they can make patient-specific convenience reliable, scalable and clinically responsible.
