FREMONT, CA: Oncorus, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical business developing next-generation viral immunotherapies to translate outcomes for cancer patients, recently announced the appointment of Barbara Yanni to fill a vacancy on its Board of Directors. Yanni has served as a director of a number of publicly traded and privately held biopharmaceutical firms since her retirement from Merck & Co. in 2014, where she was Vice President and Chief Licensing Officer.

As Oncorus advances its pipeline of intratumorally (iTu) delivered oncolytic Herpes Simplex Virus immunotherapies and intravenously (IV) administered Synthetic viral RNA (vRNA) immunotherapies, she adds substantial experience in corporate development, licensing, and financial evaluation.

Based on its oHSV and Synthetic vRNA Immunotherapy Platforms, Oncorus is developing a portfolio of iTu- and IV-administered viral immunotherapies for a variety of solid tumor indications with high unmet needs. ONCR-177 is being tested in a Phase 1 clinical trial for patients with solid tumors, both as a monotherapy and in conjunction with Merck's anti-PD-1 therapy, KEYTRUDA (pembrolizumab). ONCR-177 has the potential to escape interferon challenge and is equipped with five immune-modulatory payloads, making it one of a kind.
Oncorus' leading IV-administered Synthetic vRNA Immunotherapy candidates, ONCR-021 and ONCR-788, entail encapsulating the genomes of RNA viruses known to kill cancer cells (that is, oncolytic viruses, or OVs) in a lipid nanoparticle, or LNP, to create Synthetic vRNA Immunotherapy. ONCR-021 is a modified variant of the Seneca Valley Virus (SVV), while ONCR-788 is an optimized strain of Coxsackievirus A21 (CVA21).

From November 2001 through March 2014, Yanni served as Vice President and Chief Licensing Officer at Merck & Co. Yanni worked at Merck in a variety of capacities before becoming Chief Licensing Officer, including business growth, financial evaluation, and tax.Yanni serves on the boards of Trevena, Vaccinex, and Pharming Group N.V., all of which are public biotechnology businesses. Mesentech, a private biotechnology company, has appointed her as an independent director. She formerly served on the boards of directors of Akcea Therapeutics from 2019 until its sale in 2020, Abionyx Pharma from 2018 to 2020, both public biotechnology firms, and Symic Holdings, LLC, a private biotechnology business, from 2015 to 2019.
