NovAliX has announced the expansion of its cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) technology ability.

NovAliX will gain profit from the installation on its premises of Thermo Fisher Scientifics' high-resolution microscope, the Thermo Scientific Glacios Cryo-TEM, with extra micro-electron diffraction (microED) abilities for solving protein and small-molecule structures utilizing nanoscale crystals. It allows NovAliX to incorporate an update to a core technology to supplement its current biophysics abilities, which will enhance the progress of drug discovery programs.
NovAliX has been delivering structural results to its biopharmaceutical partners for nearly two decades, staying ahead of the competition with its technology and development. With the addition of cryo-EM to its offerings in 2016, it gained the capability to represent the full spectrum of structural biology methodologies and react to the pharmaceutical industry's new challenges.

"NovAliX prides itself on having pioneered this new field - with the ongoing support of Thermo Fisher. As an early adopter of cryo-EM, it has been a fascinating journey throughout," said Denis Zeyer, CEO at NovAliX. "We have expanded our expertise considerably; deepening our understanding of how cryo-EM can contribute to drug discovery and how these fits into that workflow. For example, in April 2020, NovAliX published an open access article in Nature Communications on a collaboration between French, German and Russian researchers, demonstrating how cryo-EM helps in understanding the resistance mechanism of Staphylococcus aureus. This fundamental research is a long way from a cure, but certainly paves the way for the design of new drugs to combat this deadly pathogen."
The introduction of this microscope collides with the extension of NovAliX's relationship with Thermo Fisher, which began in 2016. Thermo Fisher reached into co-marketing agreements with NovAliX and other Contract Research Organizations in June 2020 to offer information about the various stages of cryo-EM service packages to pharma customers.

"Cryo-EM takes structure-based drug design into a new era; the rapid adoption of this technique will have a direct impact on understanding and treating some of the world's most challenging diseases."
