FREMONT, CA: Maximising sustainability has become a top priority for an increasing number of organisations. These businesses are actively embracing environmental consciousness and looking for novel methods to balance economic performance, social responsibility, and ecological effect, encouraged by programmes like the EU's "Green Deal," among other initiatives.

RFPs will continue to reflect this trend as these commitments expand in scope and ambition, which will be noticeable to supply chain partners. Biopharmaceutical businesses are increasingly looking for collaborations that help them achieve both their commercial and environmental objectives, whether through resource-efficient operations, carbon-neutral manufacturing facilities, or eco-friendly package design.
For manufacturers, this tendency will be particularly important. In addition to figuring out how to efficiently map new customer requirements to validated processes, CDMOs will need to establish their own culture of environmental responsibility. Partners who successfully "green" their operations and mentality in 2022 and beyond will progressively differentiate themselves, not just by raising the value of their services but also by showcasing their dedication to the general well-being of society and the environment. In the upcoming years, expect to see an increasingly green value chain emerge as biopharma companies, material suppliers, and CDMOs collaborate to achieve these aims.
Biopharma, a longtime backslider in technology, has now started a long-overdue, pandemic-driven digitization sprint. Numerous businesses have rushed to virtualize their workforces, move teamwork to the cloud, and use technology to keep their operations operating and their employees secure in just the last two years.
Service providers are no different, and they don't appear to be slowing down due to rapid digitization. Automation and robotics are delivering major improvements in supply chain productivity as AI and ML-powered manufacturing innovations continue to gain traction. Expect to see further investment in these technologies given the ongoing uncertainty around pandemics.
Another long-standing obstacle is the rising expense of bringing new medications to market. Biopharma businesses will keep working to reduce the "total cost of ownership" related to creating, producing, and marketing their drugs this year. This will result in a greater emphasis being placed on the value of outsourcing relationships as well as their function.
Smart service providers have learned that biopharma businesses are looking for outside professionals who can do more than just fill up a skill gap on their team or allow them to concentrate on their core competencies. A strategic, value-adding combination of specialised services, tailored solutions, and effective operations—one that covers as much of the value chain as possible—is what these consumers are increasingly seeking from providers.
CDMOs work hard to actively develop new alliances of their own, particularly amongst manufacturers with additive skill sets or complementary specialities. To synchronise knowledge in ways that reduce time-to-market, speed up technological advancements, and provide considerable long-term value for consumers, several high-profile CDMO alliances have already begun to take shape recently.
