At the macro level, an important trend that can be seen is that clients are beginning to use laboratory automation sooner in the development process. Earlier, it used to be that labs developed tests for their experiments and then later automated them. Now clients are using automation as part of the program to build their tests, which helps solve the challenge of scaling those tests moving forward.

It’s not necessarily the conventional high-throughput automation with big robots. Scientists are being able to seamlessly incorporate manual applications and robotic automation, evolving to meet lab needs more swiftly. This approach makes laboratory tools steadily available and allows instant use, permitting automation whenever possible. Leveraging automation tools can happen rapidly and without any programming, resulting in simple process alterations and establish a seamless connection to their instruments. Mobile robots not only load samples into instruments but also move them through hallways and on elevators, ensuring samples and reagents get wherever they are required. Dedicated processes enable error reduction, and increase reliability and repeatability of experiments. Additionally, easy-to-use interfaces can fast track manual processes to provide a seamless ecosystem for data collection.
Another trend that we are seeing is using automation to much longer and far more detailed processes. A part of this trend is driven by new-age sequencing applications. For instance, instead of having 400 plates to run that have to go through 10 experimental steps, some labs have to run just four plates but perform 150 steps. These long, detailed workflows with low volume and high complexity need a distinct way of designing and administering experiments with automation. They also perform best when users can plan and test while experiments run in real-time, making changes on the go.
Conventionally, core labs in large pharmaceutical firms would limit the experiments that scientists could run on big automation programs. Because of the resourcing required to add a new experiment to these large applications, scientists could only perform a limited set of tests using specific plate formats. Now, we see a need from researchers to run smaller batches of plates. For core labs to perform high-mix, low-volume work, they need higher flexibility in their software and hardware. The pandemic drove change in automation solutions as well. Besides, social distancing requirements mean fewer people could work at the bench, which made automation paramount for many labs. The use of automation proved that labs could function effectively even in the absence of scientists. Moving forward, lab automation will certainly become the norm as more and more pharmaceutical companies jump on the bandwagon.
