The life sciences industry is still in the early stages of its digital transformation path. However, many laboratory setups have IoT support and use partial automation for a few operations like sample preparation and analysis. This is partly because most laboratories hold instruments and systems from various suppliers, all of which rely on proprietary software, resulting in data silos. Most scientific organizations face a hurdle in integrating these platforms and their data, which is a roadblock to effective data management and exchange.

The outbreak of COVID-19 underlined the need for laboratory digitization to guarantee business continuity and facilitate worldwide collaboration. Organizations with advanced digital technology, such as automation or remote access to experimental data, were better equipped to cope with disruptions and quickly adapt to new working methods. During the epidemic, executives understood that their companies needed to be more adaptable, which prompted them to embrace digitization. According to a poll of 200 laboratory heads, the COVID-19 problem has expedited its digital transformation efforts by 77 percent.
The pandemic also demonstrated the need to share worldwide data and information while working toward a common goal, like vaccine development. Modern digital infrastructure can enable a globally distributed, highly qualified workforce by allowing scientists to do data analysis remotely and providing access to data from everywhere. Every company will be at a different point in its digital transformation. Those just starting may have limited digital capabilities and rely almost entirely on manual processes. On the other hand, mature digital organizations will usefully integrate networked technology with the highest level of automation. AI and machine learning (ML) will help optimize laboratory procedures, from managing consumable supply chains to maintaining equipment in the most digitally mature enterprises.
