A wide variety of cancers can be treated with immunotherapy, but it is also used for treating other conditions, such as disorders of the immune system, reactions to allergies, the autoimmune system, transplantation of tissues and organs, and disorders associated with inflammation and diseases caused by infectious agents.
In addition to treating Cancer, immunotherapy is used to treat a wide variety of other conditions as well.
A cancerous tumor: Immunotherapy enhances the immune system's ability to detect and destroy cancer cells. Each cancer cell has more than 11,000 gene mutations that distinguish it from healthy cells. Immunotherapy can be effective against some of these mutations.
Many types of Cancer have been treated with immunotherapy and are being investigated. Here are a few examples:
Cancer of the brain, Cancer of the bladder, Cancer of the breast, Cancer of the cervical tissue, and Aplastic anemia.
Immunodeficiencies: Some types of primary immunodeficiencies are treated with immunotherapy. There are more than 200 genetic conditions that impair the immune system, which is considered primary immunodeficiency.
The following are some of these conditions:
Deficiency of CTLA4, Deficit in LRBA, Deficiency of leukocyte adhesion, A severe form of combined immunodeficiency, and the X-linked lymphoproliferative disorder.
Immunoglobulin replacement therapy is the most crucial and beneficiary therapy for treating primary immunodeficiencies, according to the Immune Deficiency Foundation.
Reactions to allergies: The American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology recommends immunotherapy to prevent allergic reactions caused by substances such as venom from bees, mites that live in dust, and pollen from grass.
In order to reduce the immune system's sensitivity to the substance patients are allergic to, immunotherapy involves slowly increasing doses of the substance.
Diseases caused by autoimmunity: An autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system attacks healthy tissues. Immunotherapy blocks immune activity in autoimmune conditions.
Transplantation of tissues and organs: People receiving transplanted organs have long used immunotherapy to lower their chances of rejection by dampening their immune system. Drugs are usually administered in two phases: an induction phase, when large doses of immunosuppressants are administered at the time of transplantation, and a long-term maintenance phase.
In the maintenance phase, four types of drugs are usually administered:
Inhibitors of calcineurin
Agents that inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells
Inhibitors of mTOR
Stimulants.
Disorders associated with inflammation: Inflammatory factors are suppressed by immunotherapy. Inflammatory disorders, including many autoimmune disorders, can be treated with immunotherapy.
