How are robotics being used in pharma manufacturing?
Increasingly, pharmaceutical businesses are cooperating with automation and robotics solutions providers to integrate these technologies into medication development, manufacturing, and anti-counterfeiting processes. Automation technology can accelerate manufacturing, making it safer and more efficient while reducing labor costs. Most pharmaceutical sector robots are now limited to dispensing, sorting, kit assembly, light machine maintenance, and packing.
The use of robotics is projected to rise to ensure the viability of personalized treatment. With robotics and automation, individual gene sequences can be analyzed more quickly and at a lower cost, reducing the process's complexity and expenses. Robots are also addressing drug shortages caused by manufacturing delays for products such as pre-filled syringes.
For instance, Clemson University and Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation have created a tabletop robot that can fill, cap, and seal sterile pre-filled syringes, thereby reducing expenses by preventing drug overfill and minimizing contamination. In the absence of a robot, filling syringes is a highly controlled procedure that specialized technicians in ISO-certified clean rooms must perform. It is anticipated that the robot will assist in solving the shortage of pre-filled syringes in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
