China has been a hot topic in the clinical space for several years, and companies locating clinical trials in the APAC region is now a trending topic in the life sciences
FREMONT, CA: Sponsor organizations are attracted to China for a variety of reasons. The country has an ageing population, according to an article on the Credevo website, with an anticipated 2.2 billion hospital visits each year. China has about 1 million independent outpatient clinics and 29,140 hospitals. There is a huge and increasing network of certified hospitals and clinical trial project managers to conduct trials. Government funding for foreign partnerships, as well as a better regulatory environment for trials and new medication approvals, is also available.

Clinical trial applications are usually approved by the China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) in ten months. The trial evaluation and approval process in China has improved as a result of regulatory reform. A new IND review mechanism was implemented in 2019 as part of these enhancements. Trials can usually be conducted within 60 days after the application date. After eliminating the need to apply to the provincial SFDA, applicants need to complete three stages (pre-IND meeting, submission of the filing to the CDE, and CDE evaluation and approval) to carry out an IND. The time it takes for regulatory approval has been cut in half, from 265 days to 65 days.
These changes have undoubtedly been observed by the industry. The amount of clinical trial growth in the Asian nation is revealed in research by GlobalData. The environment of global clinical trial conduct has evolved dramatically in the previous five years, according to the report. The United States, China, India, Iran, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom were the seven countries with the most clinical trial initiations during that time period. The surge of trial initiations in China, on the other hand, is eye-opening.
In 2019, China's trial initiation rate grew to 23.9 percent, while the United States' rate fell to 20percent. The outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, which is thought to have started in China, had little effect on the country's progress. Trial initiations in China climbed to 26.5 percent in 2020, whereas they declined to 19.6 percent in the United States. In 2021, the United States made a comeback, with initiations rising to 21.3 percent, while China witnessed its first reduction in the five-year period, falling to 23.1 percent.
