Researchers use animal testing before human clinical trials, but this method is defective as animal models are not replicative of the human body.
FREMONT, CA: A Boston biotech company, Emulate, developed a technology called “organ-on-a-chip” which contains microfluidic channels that can be integrated with human cell types, including liver, lung, brain, and intestinal cells. Fluid can be pumped through the device to replicate blood flow, and pressure can be applied to replicate a breathing lung or peristalsis in the intestine. Emulate’s technology has been used by researchers to study Parkinson’s disease, simulating the brain inflammation that occurs in patients and studying the effect of various therapeutics. Since microdevice technology closely duplicates human biology, it has the potential to increase drug development success rates, improve patient safety, and make drugs available in the markets faster. Due to Emulate’s creative approach, it has earned a spot on Fast Company’s list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.

The conventional models of drug research can be slow and detrimental to humans and animals but organ-on-a-chip technology encompasses such detrimental issues. 27 drugs were examined by Emulate out of which 22 had been previously found toxic to humans. This toxicity has caused 208 patient fatalities, and 10 liver transplants, even though the drugs had been tested in lab animals before conducting human clinical trials. On the other hand, Emulate’s organ chips were able to identify 87 percent of these drugs as toxic. If these drugs were readily available from day one, then it would have never made it to human trials.
The technology, organ-on-a-chip can help the drug industry move beyond animal testing, Jim Corbett, CEO of Emulate says that the ethical issues around the current regulatory framework for the testing drug are very much real. He acknowledges that though regulators need a new framework, they also need modern technologies to spur that evolution. He goes on to add that at Emulate the passionate team members are dedicated to improving the drug discovery process so that everyone can live healthier and happier lives.
