FREMONT CA: Global clinical trial activity grew by 0.9 percent in Q4 2021 compared to the same quarter in 2020. In Q4 2021, industry-sponsored trials accounted for 57.5 percent of total activity, up 5.0 percent from Q4 2020. Non-industry financed trials accounted for 42.5 percent of all clinical trials in Q4 2021, a 5.0 percent decline from the same period in 2020.

In Q4 2021, oncology was the main therapy area for industry-sponsored clinical trials, accounting for 31.2 percent of all trials, followed by Infectious Disease (15.0 percent), Central Nervous System (13.7 percent), Gastrointestinal (7.2 percent), and Cardiovascular (6.3 percent). In Q4 2020, Oncology dominated with a 27.2 percent share, followed by Infectious Disease (19.3 percent), Central Nervous System (13.2 percent), Metabolic Disorders (8.3percent), and Cardiovascular (7.0percent).
Oncology was the main therapy area for non-industry-supported clinical trials in Q4 2021, accounting for 25.5 percent of all trials. In Q4 2020, Oncology led non-industry supported clinical trials with a 23.4 percent share, followed by Central Nervous System (21.7 percent), Infectious Disease (16.2 percent), Cardiovascular (9.7 percent), and Gastrointestinal (7.7 percent). The Central Nervous System came in second with 25.1 percent, followed by Infectious Disease (12.7 percent), Cardiovascular (9.0 percent), and Gastrointestinal (6.3 percent).
With a 46.9 percent share in Q4 2021, Asia-Pacific was the most active region for industry-funded clinical trials activity, compared to 53.0 percent in Q4 2020. Asia-Pacific saw the most non-industry-sponsored clinical trial activity in Q4 2021 with a 43.5 percent share, down from 52.0 percent in Q4 2020. North America was the second most active region in Q4 2021, with a 36.1 percent share, up from 32.5 percent in Q4 2020, followed by Europe, which had a 30.4 percent share in Q4 2021, up from 28.8 percent in Q4 2020.
