Immunotherapy is a broad cancer therapy category that provokes the body's immunity to fight cancer cells. Cancer cells are diverse from normal cells in that they do not usually die. They expeditiously divide like an out-of-control copy machine that won't quit creating images.
These abnormal cells often change or mutate, helping them avoid the immune system and protecting the body from disease and infections. Cancer immunotherapy drugs are intended to alert the immune system about these mutated cells so it can locate and destroy them.

How does the immune system work?
A vital function of the immune system is distinguishing normal cells in the body from foreign cells.
The immune system is forever on patrol, like a police force charged with ridding the body of foreign invaders, for example, viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Lymph nodes, which fabricate most of the immune system, function as police stations throughout the body. White blood cells, involving lymphocytes such as "T cells," fight infection and cancer. They are the police officers. When a foreign invader is identified, the immune system is alerted through chemical signals, just as a police station radios police officers to warn them about a problem.
The immune system relies on receptor proteins in specific immune cells to detect the invaders. At designated checkpoints, when activated or deactivated, these receptors allow it to differentiate between healthy and invading cells. The checkpoints are required to maintain the immune system from attacking healthy cells.
Cancer cells do not trigger an immune response because they are the body's cells that have mutated—so those once-healthy cells no more behave like normal cells. Since the immune system doesn't identify the distinction, these hazardous cells can continue to grow, divide, and spread over the body.
How does immunotherapy trigger the immune system to help fight cancer?
Immunotherapies employ various methods to attack tumour cells. Immunotherapy types fall into three general categories:
โ Checkpoint inhibitors, where cancer cells indicate that trick the immune system into the opinion they're healthy cells, are disrupted, revealing them to attack by the immune system.
โ Cytokines, where protein molecules called cytokines help control and direct the immune system—are synthesized in a laboratory and then inserted into the body in much larger doses than are produced naturally.
โ Cancer vaccines may reduce cancer risk by attacking viruses that cause cancer or may treat cancer by exhilarating the immune system to attack cancer cells in a specific part of the body.
Immunotherapy may be employed alone or combined with other cancer treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy.
