The DRIVe (BARDA’s Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures) Solving Sepsis initiative is looking for new ways to produce diagnostics, technologies, and therapies that are based on the host.
FREMONT, CA: BioAegis Therapeutics, a clinical-stage private company developing therapies for inflammatory, infectious, and degenerative diseases based on a portfolio built encompassing gelsolin technology, announced that it has been awarded a contract from Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to further grow the company’s novel host-directed treatment for the critically ill sepsis patient population.

Promoting a Host-Directed Therapy for the Treatment of Sepsis
The DRIVe (BARDA’s Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures) Solving Sepsis initiative is looking for new ways to produce diagnostics, technologies, and therapies that are based on the host. BioAegis has developed a unique recombinant protein therapy that has the potential to cure a wide range of inflammatory illnesses, such as sepsis, caused by injury or infection. Given the paucity of FDA-approved sepsis host-targeted therapeutics, recombinant human plasma gelsolin (rhu-pGSN) has the potential to address a critical clinical need in this patient population: restoring immunological balance.
This protein therapy supplementation strategy is intended to normalize the patient’s immunological response rather than suppressing it. The product is a recombinant version of a naturally occurring human host protein with a favorable safety profile in clinical studies. Rhu-pGSN is now being examined in severe COVID-19 in the EU, and this funding will fund additional research in the U.S.
Rhu-pGSN Regulates Inflammation Without Suppressing Immune Function And Is Pathogen Agnostic
Rhu-pGSN is a threat-agnostic, broad-acting substance that promotes immune cell activity at injury sites by increasing pathogen killing and reducing inflammation. To improve results, the product will target severe systemic inflammatory reactions caused by infection or damage.
The collaboration will help with regulatory activities and production preparedness leading to a clinical trial of the technology in a sepsis patient population. These efforts will help position this technology for application as a host-based treatment for sepsis and other acute inflammatory conditions.
