Anabios receives a $1,734,409 grant from NINDS for developing its new analgesic.
FREMONT, CA: The need for suitable new therapeutics for people suffering from persistent neuropathic pain is critical. The mismatch of key neuropathic pain assessment endpoints in preclinical vs. clinical trials has been a significant reason in the lack of development of novel analgesics for neuropathic pain in recent years. AnaBios receives a $1,734,409 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) as part of the NIH HEAL Initiative to further the development of their new analgesic, ANB-504. PhaseX®, AnaBios' unique human-based translational paradigm, was used to generate the new molecule, which helps overcome the constraints of the current pain drug discovery technique by generating human-relevant and clinically predictive data at the preclinical stage.

AnaBios is working on ANB-504, a lead small molecule dual inhibitor of two sodium channels that are expressed selectively in sensory neurons and have been linked to a variety of chronic pain conditions. ANB-504 inhibits action potentials in human sensory neurons in a range of pathological situations with strong, dose-dependent inhibition and is designed to treat mixed inflammatory and neuropathic pain. This grant will fund the execution of Investigational New Drug-enabling research in order to acquire FDA permission for further human dosing in Phase 1 clinical trial.

Every year, more than 25 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain is a complex and debilitating medical condition for which there is now no effective and safe treatment. According to statistics, more than half of patients do not react to treatment with current drugs such as opioids, gabapentin, pregabalin, and tricyclic antidepressants. As a result, there is an urgent unmet need for novel pharmacological solutions to produce alternative pain management options that are more effective while reducing the risk of addiction and abuse.
