Duexis is a prescription medication used to treat arthritis. It contains ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory) and famotidine (which prevents ulcers). Advil, Motrin, and generic versions of ibuprofen are also available over-the-counter. Pepcid is an OTC form of famotidine.
Cold symptoms are commonly treated with Robitussin DM, an OTC medication. The medication contains dextromethorphan, an expectorant, and guaifenesin, a cough suppressant. Mucinex also contains guaifenesin, and Delsym contains dextromethorphan.
What is an API on a drug label?
On the Drug Facts label of OTC drugs, the API and the amount each dose contains are listed under the heading "Active Ingredient," followed by the health effect.
On prescription drug labels, the brand name (if applicable) appears above the generic name. A drug's generic name is also its API. Depending on the generic version, the label may also tell what brand name the drug is usually sold under. An example would be "Amphetamine 10MG: Generic for Adderall 10MG."
Generic names are typically derivatives of chemical names, which are less frequently used. Acetylsalicylic acid, for example, is the chemical name for aspirin.
