The term "alternative therapy" generally refers to any treatment that falls outside the mainstream of western medicine. Complementary medicine refers to alternative approaches used alongside standard medical procedures.
Fremont, CA: It is difficult to define complementary and alternative therapies beyond that, in large part due to their diversity. Some of the treatments include diet and exercise changes, hypnosis, chiropractic adjustments, and poking needles into the skin (acupuncture).

There is a heated debate over alternative therapies' benefits. People have tried almost all of these practices even though more research is needed to determine their efficacy.
The NIH reports that over 38 percent of American adults use alternative medicine as of 2008 (the most recent valid data we could find). American medicine is being transformed by some of the practices listed below.
Naturopathy
A broad branch of alternative medicine, naturopathic medicine relies on nature's healing power. In addition to conventional medicine, naturopathic doctors also study alternative medicine. By exploring a patient's mental, physical, and spiritual manifestations, they seek to understand the cause of their condition.
Acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and nutrition are all part of naturopathy's treatment methods.
Acupressure
In acupuncture, needles are used, but in acupressure, there are no needles. In Chinese medicine, specific points along the body's "meridians" are applied through the use of hands, elbows, or feet.
According to acupressure theory, meridians are pathways that carry life energy (qi) throughout the body. Blocked or out-of-balance meridians can cause illness, according to the theory.
The purpose of acupressure is to relieve blockages so that energy can flow freely, restoring wellness. The results of a handful of studies have been positive, but more research is needed.
Acupuncture
Although the term "acupuncture" may conjure up images of sharp needles, the term actually refers to stimulating specific body points.
One of the most common types involves penetrating the skin with thin needles controlled by a practitioner, but electrical stimulation is also possible.
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy promotes healing with essential oils and concentrates of roots, leaves, seeds, and blossoms from plants. Thousands of years have passed since this ancient practice was established.
You can diffuse the oils or massage them into your skin after diluting them with carrier oil. Inflammation or infections can be treated with some, while relaxation and calm can be brought about with others.
Researchers have investigated aromatherapy for anxiety, depression, pain relief, nausea, and insomnia in clinical settings. According to a study published in 2017, aromatherapy with lavender promotes sleep and reduces anxiety among heart disease patients.
