Prof. Dr. Stephan Sobottka of the University Hospital of Dresden’s Carl Gustav Carus Clinic for Neurosurgery in Dresden, Germany, performed the revolutionary technique, which is part of a bigger study involving up to 60 patients in Germany. The money-making trial intends to show that Aleva’sdirectSTIMTM Directional Deep Brain Stimulation device improves outcomes for Parkinson’s disease and essential tremors in the European Union.
“The directSTIM system is simple and straightforward to use. We will be able to immediately determine the advantages of directional stimulation, and we look forward to completing the study with Aleva,” said Prof. Dr. Stephan Sobottka.
The goal of the study is to use Aleva’s directional electrodes and corroborate prior research published in numerous journals, including a seminal study published in Brain (DOI: 10.1093/brain/awu102) that was the first to use the directional approach in patients. The final results should be available in the first half of 2022. Aleva plans to apply for IDE approval from the US FDA in Q4 of 2021.
“As one of the originators of Directional Deep Brain Stimulation, Aleva has done a substantial amount to study this modality and its benefit to patients. We expect to quantitatively determine its specific advantages within the Aleva study,” said Prof. Andres Lozano, Department of Neurosurgery, University of Toronto, and longtime Senior Medical Advisor to Aleva.
Alevas’ ground-breaking DBS system uses a directed electrode technique that is designed to be more precise and efficient than currently existing options, with the potential to lessen side effects. Aleva is the only DBS business that offers 24 distinct current sources and the only DBS lead with 12 directional electrodes, allowing the surgical team to be as flexible as possible. In addition, each directional electrode is rounded, not rectangular, in contrast to competitors, giving increased safety and enhanced directional fields.These benefits are based on the company’s patented micro-engineered leads made with MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology developed and licensed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
