The resulting studies, known as in silico trials, use Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based simulation technologies to replicate human physiology and serve as a proxy for patients for pharmaceutical companies. Researchers and clinicians feed drug data into a simulated model to predict drug exposure in patients, allowing them to assess a drug's safety and effectiveness without putting humans or animals at risk.

There is an increase in companies using them during drug discovery to make assumptions about its efficacy, even before they think about clinical trials, in the last four to five years.
For the next decade, the aim is to tailor the model to each patient to predict a customized dose based on the patient's physiological parameters. It would be similar to creating a virtual twin of each patient to computationally recognize and try the best drug even before treating a patient. If effective, AI-based biosimulation could revolutionize the drug development process by identifying the best drug and dosage for each patient early in the treatment process. This instance has the potential to be a home run. More medications could pass trials, succeed, and save more lives as a result.
